Of all the things to wake up to in the middle of the night, the cost of using my bathroom should definitely not be on the list. Must have been that list of taxation without representation I published yesterday. Go figure. And yes, this applies to all of us.
Upon entering the bathroom in the morning, I turn on the light. I’m taxed on electricity. I was taxed on the lightbulb I plugged in, a special lightbulb based on green energy, to reduce my carbon footprint. I sit on the toilet, an item I was taxed on to install, and I was also taxed by the installer and his business. I do my duty, paying taxes on sewage to remove it from my home. I use toilet paper that was taxed at the store where I bought it. I use water that is taxed in my monthly water bill. Again I am taxed on the energy I use to flush the toilet. I am also taxed on the tools and cleaning supplies to prevent the toilet from being totally gross.
Then I use the shower. I'm taxed on my water usage again, as well as the soap, shampoo, hair rinse and moisturizers I use. I paid tax on my comb, brush, hairdryer and other products I use to do my hair. I paid tax on my deodorant to keep from being stinky myself. I paid tax on the towel I use to dry myself, and the laundry soap/softener, machines, energy, electricity or gas to run the washer and dryer. I pay tax on the tissue I use to blow my nose, and the garbage service that takes it away. Sometimes I pay a little extra to the recycling program, because some of my garbage doesn’t qualify for the recycling program in the city.
I’m taxed on my property, a home I require to keep me from shitting in the street. I’m taxed on the bathroom rug, the cleaners to sanitize the floor, sink and mirror. I’m taxed on maintaining and fixing things to keep them in working order. I’m taxed on toothpaste and soap.
I haven’t even turned off the light and exited the bathroom yet, and I’ve paid more taxes than I ever want to admit. I realize there are millions of us paying these same taxes to our county, city, state and federal government. Millions of dollars collected, taken from us before we even get our first cup of coffee (also taxed), so we can start our day and continue paying more taxes, so the government can take care of us. Something tells me taking care of citizens is not on the government’s agenda at all!
Blessings to all this fine Sunday morning. Have you paid your share of taxes today? I know I have, and it’s not even 10 am as I write this!
